Welcome to the October blog. Caution: watch for landmines.

The “wife” of Jesus

“Jesus said to the…my wife…she will be able to be my disciple.” These are the words said to be on a business card size papyrus fragment that recently came to light through Ms. Karen L. King, Professor of Divinity at Harvard University, pictured below. Dr. King’s writings include The Secret Revelation of John; The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle; What Is Gnosticism?; Reading Judas: The Gospel of Judas and the Shaping of Christianity (with Elaine Pagels); and Revelation of the Unknowable God. Other publications include Images of the Feminine in Gnosticism (ed.) and Women and Goddess Traditions in Antiquity and Today. Isn’t it an amazing coincidence that the revelation that Jesus had a wife would come through one like Dr. King, who has such a marvelous background of studies in feminine Gnosticism, goddess traditions, women apostles, the Gospel of Mary, and other wonderfully relevant themes. What else could one expect from Harvard? Ah, the liberal, atheistic media moguls love this stuff. “If it is proven authentic….” They cast this term around as though if it can be dated prior to the sixth century, it is “authentic.” Most uninformed readers will equate that term with being “factual…credible.” It can “authentically” be from the second or third century, but that does not make it Scripture or on a par with Scripture, or that it possesses a shred of credibility. There were many uninspired writers of that era who wanted to enlarge upon the Christian story. Dozens of early “church fathers” were writers and commentators on the Christian faith but were not “inspired.” Many, perhaps most, were off base theologically; others were far too influenced by Judaism or Greek philosophy. Gnostics, against whom Paul railed in Colossians, were into esoteric religion and wrote a number of documents that were rejected and dismissed by early orthodox Christians. In an interview, Dr. Darrell L. Bock, senior research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and author of Who Is Jesus?, explained that “we have no way of tracing where [the fragment] came from.” He also said that it is likely a Gnostic Christian text.Gnostic gospels, such as the apocryphal Gospel of Philip, claim that Jesus had a romantic relationship with Mary Magdalene. Such stories are fresh fodder for the tabloid gristmills, which is basically what news outlets are today, and are dearly loved by unbelieving liberal professors. They are quick to give credence to such spurious writings while denouncing the truly authentic and authoritative Christian Scriptures. The Bible does refer to Jesus’ wife numerous times, but it is never Mary Magdalene or any other female person. It is the church.

A sigh, not a song

“The whole creation groans and travails in pain” (Romans 8:22). What a change has come to God’s grand creation to which, when He had finished, He gave His own approval by saying, “and God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.” It was upon this occasion that there occurred that great symphony of nature when the cymbals and the flutes and the drums and the harps and the viols and the trumpets of the whole creation joined in music. It was then that “the morning stars sang together” in their first concert. The stars and the hills, the sea and the mountains are full of music and they will some day become articulate in song, for Isaiah speaks of the mountains breaking forth in choral singing. But until that day of the coming song, we have this day of the sigh. There is a sigh in nature rather than a song. Pick up an ocean shell and you find its roar is tuned to the minor key. Listen to the wind blow its zephyr or howl its cyclone, and it is also tuned to the minor key. Listen to the birds sing and the beasts growl, and they too are tuned to the minor key. In fact, all nature has its pitch of life and expression in the minor key. That is why it is a sigh instead of a song. That is why it is a groan instead of a shout. That is why it is travail instead of triumph. All of the voices of nature are in the minor key and they will continue until the present bondage of corruption is succeeded by the coming liberty of the “children of God.” – Dr. Roy L. Laurin, Romans: Where Life Begins, pp. 297,298

Question: Homosexuality is condemned in Leviticus, but why do Christians disregard the other prohibitions that are mentioned there? Answer: Christians do not ignore those Levitical prohibitions but recognize that most of them are peculiar to the Hebrews, God’s chosen people. They were to mark the Israelites as a “holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth” (Deuteronomy 7:6). The eating of certain foods, dwelling designs, specific farming guidelines, and ceremonial practices were for Israel only in consideration of their relationship to God. Restrictions governing the “clean and unclean” were not carried over to the Gentile church (Acts 10:9-15).Moral obligations, however, were universal and expected of Christians. The abominations of fornication, adultery, bestiality, incest, and homosexuality would never be rescinded. These are “my judgments,” said the Lord (Leviticus 18:4). They are repeated specifically or in principle to the New Testament Christians. Moral sins are different from many others because they affect more than just the individual and their effect may never be removed (Proverbs 6:33,34).

 A cartoon parody

In a Wizard of Id cartoon floating around the Net, the medieval king’s secretary asks the king (a character that resembles the President) what he will be offering the peasants in his upcoming speech. “Nothing they can afford to refuse,” was his reply. So, on the balcony of the castle, the king hold’s forth: “Elect me and I promise you free health care! Free housing! Free clothing! Food stamps! And jobs for everybody! Any questions?” From the crowd of peasants below came a question: “What do we need jobs for?” Hmmmmmm…. Think about it.

Technology targeted again by UPCI

Most Manuals of Discipline, regardless of the denominations they are prepared for, need updating periodically. I usually have no problem with that. However, we are confronted again at the upcoming General Conference with possibly another round of adjustments to our policies concerning technology. True, that field is developing exponentially and deserves our vigilance since it may bode ill for holiness-loving peoples around the world. But is strengthening our positions because so many are being negatively affected the purpose behind the changes? Let’s hope so. Until it is made public, I have no comment on the resolution that may come from the committee that is working on this issue  However, the General Superintendent has asked the rank and file ministers to provide input to the committee as they study the matter. If you have not done so, it may not be too late even with the General Conference approaching in a few days. Send your comments and suggestions to rmorley@upci.org. Below is the text of my personal suggestions to them: “My observation from fifty-six years of ministry in the UPCI is that we moved on the television issue early in its infancy before too many of our people had them. I was at the conference when the relevant amendments were adopted. We got on top of the issue before it got on top of us. Many pastors have largely been able to manage the problem in their churches with the aid of the Manual’s statement regarding that medium. That did not happen with the Internet. It was upon us and within us before its potential was realized. It is essential to businesses in our current economy, and many families pay their bills and communicate with each other via the Internet. Students research there. The vast majority of our ministers have access to it. We do have to urge our people to apply filters to their computers, and otherwise manifest common sense and spiritual honesty in their use. As you consider the proper wording for any changes in the Manual positions on technology use, I urge you to leave the Manual positions on television (as follows) intact: .1)  “No minister having a television in his or her home shall be permitted to hold license or credentials with the United Pentecostal Church International. This does not preclude the option to use television for advertising.” 2)  “We wholeheartedly disapprove of our people indulging in any activities which are not conducive to good Christianity and godly living, such as theaters, dances, mixed bathing or swimming, women cutting their hair, make-up, any apparel that immodestly exposes the body, all worldly sports and amusements, and unwholesome radio programs and music. Furthermore, because of the display of all these evils on television, we disapprove of any of our people having television sets in their homes. We admonish all of our people to refrain from any of these practices in the interest of spiritual progress and the soon coming of the Lord for His church.” (Articles of Faith) 3)  “Holiness and Television Programs It is very evident that spirituality and holiness are deeply entwined together. The Scriptures teach that carnality is enmity toward God. The use of media must therefore he carefully considered so that we do not take the beautiful truths of God unto areas that will contribute to the downfall of a child of God. The use of television in the home has become a serious concern to parents, teachers, sociologists, politicians, and religious leaders. Statistically, evidence indicates that the increase in violence, sexual immorality, and destruction of the family is in part caused by the display of these evils on television. We must strive always for a spiritual position in our living, and wisely, the United Pentecostal Church International has warned its members of the evils displayed on television programs and admonished them not to have television sets in their homes for the sake of their spiritual welfare.” (Position Paper on Holiness) 4)  “…Rejected as being unsuitable for Christians or for their homes (movie theaters, television).” (Technology Position Paper) These stipulations in our Manual have encouraged both ministers and laymen to avoid having a television. Our pastors need these statements to remain as “handles” to take hold of in helping us keep the negative influences of television out of our homes. We have probably heard all the talk about how a computer, or similar device, can be programmed to pick up some television broadcasts that are accessed through the Internet. It is unlikely that wording could be adopted to satisfactorily fix all of that. But televisions are not bought as computers but are used for entertainment, and it is mostly ungodly programming that is available. News can be obtained more quickly and easily through the computer/I-pad/I-phone, etc. Even the documentaries on channels like Animal Planet and National Geographic are anti-Christian and strongly pro-evolution, making them extremely dangerous for our children. There is really no excuse for having a television. What can be done legislatively about computers and the Internet at this time is probably limited. I leave that to your thoughtful and prayerful deliberations. Pastors themselves much teach and draw lines, but television has virtually always been on the taboo list. Our elders wisely and with foresight made some determinations that have encouraged tens of thousands of families avoid the evils of that medium. Let their wisdom also guide us in the choices we make today by letting the above references to television in our Manual stand as they are. Thank you for prayerfully considering the forgoing suggestions. In Christ, JREnsey

“Could it be true?” I asked myself.

Musing one day about faith and the miracles it could bring, the thought came to me: “Faith rewarded too often, destroys faith.” Whoa! How could that be? I asked God to show me. This is what came to me, and perhaps it was only for me: “Faith rewarded too often becomes common—the expected, the normal, the average. The normal has a way of becoming the unappreciated. Answers custom designed by us for God that come too regularly lose their miraculous shine. Deliverance from every trouble, pain and adversity dissipates their positive effect in your life.” An old saying came to mind: “Too much of a good thing can be bad.” Would that apply? As I continued to think on these things, I remembered what Paul said to Timothy: “Endure hardness as a good soldier” (II Timothy 2:3). Then, like a thunderclap, the apostle’s words to the Romans jolted my mind: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience” (Romans 5:1-3). Was I supposed to circumvent events and circumstances we were telling others were “grace builders?” What God wanted to develop in me, I was wanting to avoid. I wanted my faith to get me out of hardship, out of all pain, out of all difficulty. What would I be or become if that happened? What of patience? What of grace? Wherewith hope? A faith that delivers from every adversity overcomes the purpose of adversity. Such a faith morphs into something else that makes God a puppet. We are justified by faith, we stand in grace, we rejoice in hope. Therefore, we can glory in tribulations.

A “religion czar”?

The current administration has czars for everything. All 45 of them have been lackeys appointed just to do his bidding and circumvent elected officials. His Green Czar had a communist background, was outed, and had to quit. His Safe School Czar was a homosexual activist. The others are apparently still quietly working to undo America. The recent upheavals and murders of Americans in the Mideast were said to be prompted by a film that put Muhammad, Islam’s founder, in a bad light. Although no one, as far as I know, has actually pointed out the errors of the low budget, ill-conceived, and poor quality film, its producer and backers have had to go into hiding in fear of their lives. According to the LA Times, Islamists have put a fatwa, an Islamic ruling that virtually amounts to a death threat to those involved. Obama and Hillary Clinton have apologized for America, and probably countless others have bowed to the sheiks and licked dust to try to keep them from killing any more of our diplomats and Navy Seals. The Islamists have called for Congress to adjust the first amendment to the Constitution to remove freedom of speech. They are presenting a measure to the United Nations to make it an international crime to criticize Islam or Muhammad. I do not doubt that some kind of legislation will be enacted soon and Shariah Law will be extended internationally beyond the Middle East. If reelected, I expect Obama to appoint a “religion czar” to oversee any action taken by the UN and carry out Executive Orders affecting Islam and Shariah Law. What a great future America and Christianity will have under such an administration.

The Obama Campaign flag

Just thought you’d like to know what the new American flag might look like someday. Since the current administration finds it difficult to salute the American flag, this new one should be more to their liking.

Chinese proverb—the Chicago way

Original Chinese Proverb: Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fishand you will feed him for a lifetime. 2012 White House Revision: Give a man a welfare check, a free cell phone with unlimited free minutes, cash for his clunker, food stamps, section 8 housing, free contraceptives, Medicaid, ninety-nine weeks of unemployment, free medicine, and he will vote for Democrats the rest of his life; even after he’s deceased.

Add these up one by one and you get a phenomenal score that points to the fact that Barack Hussein Obama is determined to turn America into a Marxist-Socialist society. All of the items in the preceding paragraphs have been put into place. All can be documented very easily. The last paragraph alone is not yet cast in stone. You and I will write that paragraph.I think it matters! [ed.] [Neither this nor any other article in this blog is presented to tell anyone how they should vote. Do your research, get the facts, think of your children, consider the future of the church, pray, then vote your conscience.]

How to determine your political allegiance

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.” The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude. She rolled her eyes and said, “You must be a Republican.” “I am,” replied the man. “How did you know?” “Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help to me.” The man smiled and responded, “You must be an Obama-Democrat.” “I am,” replied the balloonist. “How did you know?” “Well,” said the man, “you don’t know where you are—or where you are going. You’ve risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You’re in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it’s my fault.” – Anonymous

Free press is gone. Free speech is going. Freedom of religion will soon be a memory. The Bill of Rights will soon be ancient history.

Parting Shots
