Thomas Jefferson’s Bible

Some say Ol’ Tom Jefferson—pardon the informal reference, but I have quoted him so much I feel like a nephew—was a Deist. Others say he wasn’t. I just know that he said a lot of things about God that seemed as though he figured the Lord was involved in this nation that he was helping to form. He once wrote to Ezra S. Ely to say, “You say you are a Calvinist. I am not. I am of a sect by myself, as far as I know.” Maybe he was right.

Something he did once in a moment of brain freeze makes me kind of queasy. He cut up his Bible. He liked what Jesus said and taught, such as the Sermon on the Mount and the parables, but didn’t set store by the miracles that He performed or referenced from the Old Testament. So he cut out portions of the Gospels and pasted them in a book he called The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth (Second Edition). It is housed today in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

Cut out of Jefferson’s Bible are references to anything supernatural, such as miracles, the Virgin Birth, the Deity of Christ, Noah’s ark, the Flood, the resurrection of Christ, the Tribulation, Second Coming, Heaven, Hell, and the devil—even the Trinity.

Of the result, Jefferson wrote, “A more beautiful or precious morsel of ethics I have never seen; it is a document in proof that I am a real Christian, that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus.” He claimed he made the compilation of selected verses for the teaching of Indian tribes, prepared especially for their level of comprehension.

He used his “Bible” himself for comforting bedtime reading and private devotions. Devotional reading is fine, Tom, but cutting out only what we like and making our own Bible is cheeky. Too bad you never included anything past John 19:42, just before the resurrection of Jesus. HE LIVES!

White smoke and mirrors: First Jesuit Pope elected

What does this mean in the scheme of endtime events? Hmmmm…. For now, I think I will leave that to the modern heirs of Nostradamus, Harold Camping, and the author of “88 Reasons” to tell us. By this time next month there should be approximately 1000 theories floating out there in cyberspace. We will evaluate some of them.

A couple of quotes from the Protestant Pope

John Calvin, in his Commentary on the Harmony of the Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1979), makes these statements:

“If the Pope wishes to be received, let him bring forward the doctrine by which he may be recognized as a minister of Christ; but so long as he continues to be what he now is, a mortal enemy of Christ, and destitute of all resemblance to the Apostles, let him cease to deck himself with borrowed feathers.” (p. 32)

“Sooner shall water mix with fire than any man shall succeed in reconciling the inventions of the Pope with the Gospel.” (p. 282)

However, Calvin, the founder of Presbyterianism, wasn’t much different from the Roman Catholic popes he condemned:

“I do not disapprove of the use which Augustine frequently made of this passage (Matthew 22:9) against the Donatists, to prove that godly princes may lawfully issue edicts, for compelling obstinate and rebellious persons to worship the true God, and to maintain the unity of the faith; for though faith is voluntary, yet we see that such methods are useful for subduing the obstinacy of those who will not yield until they are compelled.”  (p. 173)

Thus Calvin justifies his violent, even murderous, persecution of religious dissent, such as he displayed in the case of Michael Servetus and numerous Anabaptists. He insisted that Matthew 13:29 was “improperly abused by the Anabaptists, and by others like them, to take from the Church the power of the sword.” (p. 122).

This just in…

A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of the City of Lancaster, CA, which had been sued because their city council meetings were opened with prayer by local pastors who prayed “in Jesus name.” Court officials found that the City of Lancaster did not violate the Establishment Clause by having local pastors invoke the name of Jesus in opening prayers.

You may want to give a copy to your local mayor and civic leaders.

No stopping place

Once you get off track, where do you stop? Rob Bell, author of Velvet Elvis, went from being considered an evangelical pastor to an emergent proponent, then to an annihilationist/universalist, and then to a gay marriage proponent. Once guys like him start trying to merge the church with the culture, they don’t stop until they reach the bottom.

At super liberal Grace Cathedral, an appropriate location in San Francisco, Bell recently announced he endorses gay marriage. Here are his words:

“Yes, I am for marriage. I am for fidelity. I am for love,” he said, going on to get more specific. “Whether it’s a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man—and I think the ship has sailed and I think the church needs to just….this is the world we’re living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are.” Can’t you just hear Paul “affirming” the Judaizers, the Roman governors, the Gnostics, the heretics, the fornicators, and the “abusers of themselves with mankind” of his own day? Just get in line, folks. Rob is for sale at any price.

All the Rob Bell grovelers out there need to get off his bandwagon or make their own announcement for gay marriage. Again, remember that everyone is going somewhere. Better know where they are headed before piling on! They may be on their way to the bottom.

Oops! Wait…Bell just announced that he and his wife are now rediscovering (reinventing?) Christianity as an Eastern religion. Just when you think they have gone as far as they can go, they dig a little deeper into the slime pit of heresy. Keep following them and you also may discover, like in Bell’s case, that Christianity meshes well with the Eastern esoteric cults and religious that feature Yoga, contemplative prayer, labyrinths, spiritual formation, solitude/silence, transcendental meditation, and other practices of the Catholic mystics and Eastern gurus.

No wonder the media is so willing to bash Christianity. The myriad of nutcases make great targets.

The producers of a film series about the Bible, reportedly being shown on the History Channel, recently were called out for making the person playing Satan in the film look too much like B. H. Obama. There is definitely a resemblance, according to the picture at right! It had to be a coincidence, surely. But some in the Administration thought there was just a little too much similarity. Oops!

Obama’s purse

Our president has a huge purse. It is chock full of the one hundred dollar bills rolling off Ben Bernanke’s presses at the Treasury. In four years he has spent more federal dollars than all presidents combined up until George W. Bush’s second year in office. What a record! Bill O’Reilly shares these ways he is spending your tax dollars:

– $27 million to the country of Morocco to teach the folks over there how to make pottery. I guess the Moroccan government is not capable of pottery instruction. This con is courtesy of the U.S. Agency for International Development, which now has the nerve to tell us that the pottery project is “not on track to achieve its goals.” Translation: the dollars we’ve sent are likely to have been stolen.

– $1.5 million to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to study why many lesbian Americans are overweight. The National Institutes of Health calls the situation “an issue of high public health significance.” Sure. Everybody’s talking about it.

– $947,000 to research a “Mars menu.” What astronauts would eat on the planet Mars if they ever get there. NASA says it will send six volunteers into a barren Hawaiian landscape to eat stuff so it can figure out what tastes good on Mars. I am NOT making this up, with apologies to Dave Barry.

– $325,000 to develop a robot squirrel. The National Science Foundation wants the robots to scare rattlesnakes. The agency also says the robosquirrels will help in “public outreach.” Does anyone know what that means? Rocky? Bulwinkle?

– The National Science Foundation strikes again by funding a New York City theatre company called “The Civilians.” They got nearly $700,000 tax dollars to put on a play about “climate change and biodiversity.” Have you seen that play? No? That might be because it only played in Kansas City. Even Al Gore hasn’t seen it.

– Finally, if you go to the Alabama Watermelon exposition this year, you paid for some of it. If you visit Nebraska, you should know that your tax dollars funded a company that makes shampoo and toothpaste for pets. And if you like caviar—you paid for a website designed to bring those exotic fish eggs to “the masses.”

These expenditures are so stupid it hurts. But I also think they are a criminal misuse of our tax dollars. It is estimated that the federal government could save $400 billion a year by eliminating wasteful and redundant programs.

There comes a point when folks get the government they deserve. The American people reelected Obama.  And to this day, Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party are proud of their spending record.

The Donkey is the symbol of the Democratic Party. It should be the robosquirrel.

One more witness

The Cyrus Cylinder is coming to America for a visit to the Smithsonian Institute. When I saw this clay cylinder in the British Museum with cuneiform writing, testifying to a real Persian king named Cyrus who returned slaves in Babylon to their homelands, it warmed my heart. It was just one more witness to the accuracy of the Scriptures.

The cylinder dates to about 530 B.C. but was only discovered in 1879. The inscription describes the capture of Nabonidus, the last king of Babylon, by Cyrus. To no Bible believer’s surprise, the story corroborates the biblical record. You can read about Cyrus in II Chronicles 36:22,23; Ezra 1:1-4; 3:7; 4:3; 5:13,14,17; 6:3,14. There are also three references in Daniel. The cylinder suggests that the Babylonian god Marduk had appointed him as a “righteous prince” and “ruler over the whole world.” However, we know from hindsight and the Word of the Lord that the true God merely used Him as an instrument to accomplish His purposes (Isaiah 44:28; 45:1).

Just a reminder

In the Middle Ages, when the English were doing their best to bring Scotland under their control, they ordered a confiscation of all Scottish swords and similar weapons. That is the way of tyrants—take the weapons away from the masses so the tyrants will be the only ones to have them.

One morning we will wake up to the sound of military/police armored vehicles on our streets assigned to enforce an executive order that we knew would someday be handed down. I personally heard Obama say in 2008, “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.” Why? Why now? What are those “national security objectives”? Fox news reports a buildup of military hardware by the Department of Homeland Security. Huge armored vehicles and billions of rounds of ammo were recently purchased by the Department of Homeland Security. What will be the role of those who will be using this hardware?

Report on Sandy Hook shooter called for

Two Connecticut mothers, Sheila Matthews and Patricia Sabato, of the national parents’ rights organization AbleChild, garnered hundreds of signatures from Sandy Hook residents backing the need for the Connecticut Medical Examiner Wayne Carver to release the toxicology reports of Adam Lanza— to determine whether Lanza was yet another in a long list of school shooters under the influence of psychiatric drugs. They hand delivered the petition along with an official request to the Medical Examiner citing two full pages of federal and state law supporting their request. Despite the fact that under Connecticut law, the Medical Examiner is statutorily required to respond to the request, to date, he has refused to even acknowledge receipt of the request, let alone release the requested information.

“Adam Lanza wasn’t born evil,” Sabato said. “We want the records before they ask for more money for mental health, which could be dangerous. We want the records to know what kind of mental health treatment he was receiving. We need to know what he was taking.”

“I watched my own child turn into a monster on medication. I know first-hand the affects of this type of medication,” Sabato said. Sabato cites evidence that 9 out of the 10 mass shooting suspects were on some type of psychotropic medication.

About Child Mental Disorders: Parents—Know Your Rights

CHICAGO (TheBlaze/AP) — The nation’s most influential pediatrician’s group says gays should be allowed to marry to help ensure the health and well-being of their children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ new policy, published online Thursday, cites research showing that the parents’ sexual orientation has no effect on a child’s development. Kids fare just as well in gay or straight families when they are nurturing and financially and emotionally stable, the academy says.

The academy believes that a two-parent marriage is best equipped to provide that kind of environment. Their policy says that if a child has two gay parents who choose to marry, “it is in the best interests of their children that legal and social institutions allow and support them to do so.”

Do you know what your child is being taught in public school?

I have urged that Christians become involved in their child’s education by doing homeschooling, enrolling them in a sound Christian school, and, short of that, have a say in your local schools by being a curriculum watcher and serving on the local school board. If there is no one in your church who can run for a position on the board, get behind someone you know who will be a watchdog for traditional American values.

Right now, Texas schools are embroiled in a fight over a new curriculum called CSCOPE. Information is only recently coming to light about its contents since parents were allegedly not permitted to review lesson plans. As a result, one lesson on terrorism—World History Unit 12 Lesson 07—allegedly compares the Boston Tea Party to “an act of terrorism.” Also in the curriculum: food and medicine are “rights” to be expected from the authorities, not responsibilities for the family breadwinner(s) to provide. Additionally, the U.S. is partly to blame for the 9/11 attacks in NY by terrorists. Children were also requested to design a flag for a new socialist nation.

Public schools use what the government oversight committees require them to use. “Oh, but the Obama administration is not taking us toward socialism!” Get your head out of the sand, bro. They are turning our kids against everything American, against true freedom, and against Christianity by secretive, non-transparent activities and anti-American materials in the classrooms.

Attorney General begins fight against homeschooling

Americans have it pretty good when it comes to homeschooling. The federal government has generally left homeschool families alone. Individual states are left with the decision to manage homeschool, and it is legal to homeschool in every state. However, this may soon change. A dark cloud is rising over U.S. parent’s right to homeschool. It is starting with the U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. CBN News quoted Holder on March 18, 2013, saying that homeschooling is not a fundamental right. He is leading the fight to deport a German family who is currently homeschooling their children.

The Obama administration wants to fill the mind of every American child with his liberal, socialist agenda. That is why most public (government) schools have installed politically correct curricula. Our voices must be heard or they will soon be silenced permanently. Make your congressman aware of your concerns.

Home Depot disses the home

The Home Depot just gave $8,500 to the Atlanta chapter of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) as a “Silver” sponsor of the Atlanta Gala Dinner and Auction in May.

HRC is the nation’s largest and most aggressive gay marriage advocacy group, leading the charge to the Supreme Court against California’s constitutional amendment protecting marriage as between one man and one woman.

Customers who shop at Home Depot should know that a portion of their purchase will be used to help push the legalization and promotion of homosexual marriage in America.

What is wrong with this picture?

The picture is of five nuclear carriers—just like Battleship Row, Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.

This picture was taken recently in Norfolk. The Obama Administration ordered 5 nuclear carriers into harbor for “routine” (?) inspections. NORFOLK, VA. (February 8, 2013).

The first time since WWII that five U.S. aircraft carriers were docked together:

USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), USS Enterprise (CVN 65), USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) are all in port at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., the world’s largest naval station. What a target for terrorists!

Amazing math

It wasn’t long ago that Nancy Pelosi claimed 500 thousand jobs per month would be lost if there was no government stimulus. Did the stimulus work? No. Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), claimed if no deal was made on the sequester cuts, 170 million jobs will be cut. Quite a claim considering only about 130 million people in America have jobs. That is similar to Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) saying, “millions of kids [are] dying…being shot down by assault weapons.”

Think about it—these are the people who oversee the spending of our tax dollars.

Is a computer the same as a TV?

This claim is being banded about to discourage any effort to resist changes in our movement’s position on TV. It is now apparent that with the right computers and software one can access TV shows on their computers. One can also access porn and other inappropriate sites, but you have to go to where where they are to do it.

It is my understanding that one has to jump through hoops or buy special software, or pay a premium to some service provider to access regular TV programming. How different is that from knowing that down the block at the corner store is Playboy magazine, but you have to go there to get it. One may have a computer for years and never see regular TV programming, but if he has a TV, that is all he gets. Sorry, that does not seem to be equivalent. I realize that technologies are gradually merging. Who knows, someday soon everything may be integrated into one piece of equipment. But right now it may be wise to walk softly through this minefield.

The body acquiesced to the slim majority at Tampa and passed the permission to use the medium of TV. It was touted that we must do that in order to “reach the world.” We are hard pressed to find more than a handful of churches that have taken advantage of the resolution. Reaching the world seems to have gone by the boards. Quite a few more are on the Internet now, but the resolution was about TV. Maybe that was the whole thing—not advertising or programming, per se, but ultimately eliminating the TV prohibition from the Manual. Is the prohibition of TV in the Manual an embarrassment? Is it making hypocrites out of a bunch of folks? What if the standards of your local church were determined on such a basis?

I don’t have all the answers, but carefulness and prayerful thought would seem to be the wisest approach to the technology questions we are facing. Those who are committed to those elements are appreciated.
