The Standard of Ur
Did Abraham see this?
What is it? Leonard Woolley, the excavator at Ur in Southern Iraq, discovered the artifact in the royal graves of Ur. Wooley imagined that it was carried on a pole as a standard, hence its common name. Another theory suggests that it formed the soundbox of a musical instrument. It is dated to before Abraham’s time.
When found, the original wooden frame for the mosaic of shell, red limestone and lapis lazuli had decayed, and the two main panels had been crushed together by the weight of the soil. The bitumen acting as glue had disintegrated and the end panels were broken. As a result, the present restoration is only a best guess as to how it originally appeared.
On one side, captured enemy prisoners are presented to the king by his soldiers. On the other side, the king enjoys a ceremonial banquet accompanied by lyre music.
The main panels are known as “War” and “Peace.” “War” shows one of the earliest representations of a Sumerian army. Chariots, each pulled by four donkeys, trample enemies; infantry with cloaks carry spears; enemy soldiers are killed with axes, others are paraded naked and presented to the king who holds a spear.
The ‘Peace’ panel depicts animals, fish and other goods brought in procession to a banquet. Seated figures, wearing woolen fleeces or fringed skirts, drink to the accompaniment of a musician playing a lyre. Banquet scenes such as this are common on cylinder seals of the period, such as on the seal of the “Queen” Pu-abi, also in the British Museum.
Did Jesus repudiate capital punishment in 8:3-11?
Let’s ask Norman L. Geisler: Passages like Romans 13:4 present a good case for capital punishment, for the passage says, “for it [the government] does not bear a sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil” (NASB). In John 8 a woman is caught in an adulterous situation, which was cause for stoning according to the Mosaic Law. Yet Jesus did not seek her death, but rather forgave her sin. Did Jesus thereby reject capital punishment?
First, the authority in Romans 13 is the Roman government and the authorities in John 8 are Jewish ones. The point is that the Jews had to act under Roman law. For instance, if they were really going to stone a woman, why did they seek the help of Pilate in the crucifixion of Jesus? For in John 18:31 the Jews respond to Pilate saying, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” But in the case of the adulterous woman, they were ready to stone her.
Second, they did not act in accordance with the Law itself. The Law stated that both the parties, male and female, had to be brought before the people (Deut. 22:22-24). Since this woman was caught in the very act (v.4), why wasn’t the man brought out with the woman to be stoned? The scribes and Pharisees who were supposed to be law-abiding citizens failed in a key aspect of their own law.
Third, the motives of these scribes and Pharisees were wrong. They used this opportunity to try to trap Jesus so that they might have a reason for accusing Him (v.6). The crime of adultery did not seem important to them. Rather, it seemed more important to find cause for accusation against Jesus.
This passage, then, is not a good text for anyone who wants to propose that Jesus opposed capital punishment. In fact, other places of Scripture seem to support the very idea (see Gen. 9:6 and Matt. 26:52).
– Norman Geisler, The Big Book of Bible Difficulties
From the Prologue of Tyndale’s Bible
“Though a man had a precious jewel and is rich, yet if he wist not the value thereof, nor wherefore it served, he were nother the better, nor richer of a straw. Even so, though we read the Scripture and babble of it never so much, yet if we know not the use of it, and wherefore it was given, and what is therein to be sought, it profiteth nothing at all. It is not enough therefore to read, and talk of it only, but we must also desire God day and night instantly to open our eyes, and to make us understand and feel wherefore the Scripture was given that we may apply the medicine of the Scripture every man to his own sores, unless we intend to be idle disputers, and brawlers about vain words, ever gnawing the bitter bark without, and never attaining unto the sweet pith within.”
This just in: Methodist grandmothers bomb Boston Marathon
The mainstream media is reporting that two gray-haired Methodist matrons, likely Tea Party extremists, were seen running away from the blast in Boston and probably planted the bombs that…..wait, hold the wire, stop the presses…
The FBI now claims that two male Muslim radicals were evidently responsible for the bombing. One is dead and the other is in the hospital in serious condition following two separate shootouts with the police. The surviving brother has been charged.
Hmmmm….I wonder who is right?
Gun confiscation begins in New York
Some time ago I said that should gun confiscation take place, it would likely be done on the basis of whether one had used certain prescription drugs, such as those prescribed for anxiety, depression, or other so-called mental disorders. Turns out the prognostication was right. Go the website below:
Then, after a lawyer got involved, the guns were turned in, and it looked like a civil rights case could be made against the county for violation of privacy rights. Then a letter came from the County Clerk of Erie County quoting the NY State Police as saying that they had “provided information on the wrong person.” Everyone who believes that send me $100 today! They just got caught trying out their future tactic and had to backtrack…temporarily. It was a trial balloon that got shot down. But it is another reason to avoid the psychotropic drugs. See the retraction here:
Another way they may justify confiscating our guns is by labeling evangelicals, or any Christian group that opposes gay marriage and the other issues on Obama’s social agenda, as “hate groups.” That will allow them to confiscate guns as a “preventive measure.” Check it out: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/04/10/army-email-allegedly-labels-christian
What a strange, upside down nation America has become.
Quote from the Iron Lady
“There is no week, nor day, nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country. If the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance. Tyranny may always enter—there is not charm or bar against it.” – Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, 1984 during the coal miner’s strike.
R U judgmental?
Liberals and atheists are calling on conservative, Bible-believing Christians to repent of our judgmental attitude toward some elements of our society. They ought to be happy Jesus or Paul is not here on the scene or they would have plenty to fuss about. Jesus took a whip to religious hypocrites who turned a blind eye to sin and corruption. Paul went a step further in Romans 1 and called them reprobates, “filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.”
Wouldn’t VP Biden have a field day if he had heard Paul say all that? Another Philippian jail scene might take place.
Yes, Christians are judgmental. We judge that God’s Word is authoritative and is our guide for faith and practice. If it states that homosexuality is sin, then it is sin. And we should not be ashamed to say so.
What will the first Jesuit Pope do?
He will do what Jesuits were formed to do and what they do best—come against the core issues of the Reformation through education and deceit. He will emphasize the importance of “standing together” on the moral values that both Catholics and Protestants hold. That seems innocuous, but standing together will likely mean standing with them, not them standing with us. The more Protestant movements stand with Rome, the closer they get to “home.” Reunification is the ultimate goal of the pope. Watch him subtly call the daughters home.
Being from Latin America, Pope Francis will probably give liberation theology a shot in the arm. I imagine we are about to be given a peek into the shape of things revealed in the Book of Revelation. We are slouching toward Armageddon.
Where healing waters flow
Got a problem? Discouraged? Disillusioned? Let Asaph tell you how he handled his problem: Read Psalm 73.
How a leader handled a religious system that had to be cleaned up and restored (healed): Nehemiah 13.
How a man got healing for his son: Matthew 8:5-10.
Look around at the miracles in your church, at the lives put together by the Great Physician. Consider the physical wreck in John 5, at the moral wreck in John 4, and at the religious wreck in John 3. The Healer is still in business. Talk to Him as a friend. In His presence healing waters flow.
For those born between 1920-1979
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s!!
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with brightly colored, lead-based paints.
As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.
Our parents took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.
Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. Sometimes if Dad was driving slowly on a seldom traveled back road, we’d even sit on the sides of the bed of the truck!
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren’t overweight because, WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendos, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD’s, no surround-sound or CD’s, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms…….
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
Playgrounds were for playing and learning how to get along- not for forming gangs and bullying and pushing kids around.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
Not everyone was chosen on the pickup baseball game. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it?!
What churchgoers believe about life after death and other doctrines
LifeWay Research releases latest results of “largest discipleship study of its kind.”
By Melissa Steffan
The survey, which queried nearly 3,000 adults who report that they attend a Protestant church at least once a month, examined doctrinal positions for part of what LifeWay calls “the largest discipleship study of its kind.” It found that “plenty of churchgoers still struggle with basic truths about God, the Bible, and salvation.” Only 6 in 10 churchgoers say Christianity is the only way to obtain eternal life.
When it comes to Heaven, for example, more than 25 percent of those surveyed disagreed with traditional Christian doctrine, saying instead that a person who is “sincerely seeking God … can obtain eternal life through religions other than Christianity.” The survey goes on to examine other beliefs about life after death.
That’s not exactly surprising, since Americans are used to “having endless combinations of choices,” says LifeWay Research president Ed Stetzer. “Biblical truth is radical because it teaches that eternal life is a relationship with God through Jesus Christ alone.”
Meanwhile, 82 percent said they believe that the Bible is the “written word of God and is totally accurate in all that it teaches.” That is a surprising statistic. For more stats go to the site below.
What will you do when they come for your children?
President Obama is pushing for the Senate ratification of a U.N. treaty known as the Convention for the Rights of the Child (CRC). The Supremacy Clause in Article IV of our Constitution states that international treaties override state law. It was put in to keep states from interfering in border disputes, diplomats, etc. Fine, but now UN treaties are being developed that will override domestic policy. If the treaty is ratified by the Senate it will become the law of the land. If you want to know what that will mean to you and to the families in your church, please go to NOCRC.org. State control of your children is Marxist doctrine. Contact your Senator to vote against this treaty.
This is why we must not sit still and watch the Senate pass the Small Arms Treaty. There is always more to deals like that than meets the eye.
Now you know
Host Melissa Harris-Perry of MSNBC said:
We have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we’ve always had kind of a private notion of children. Your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children. So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.” – Source: TheBlaze, 4/8/13
Your kids belong to the “collective,” she says. Fearless, with a socialist (or worse) in the White House, they have finally begun to use the terminology of the Marxists. How different from the Communists in Russia in 1917 or Nazi Germany in the 1930s? NONE!
Pharaoh’s final compromise appeal to Moses: “Leave your children behind.” He knew he could raise another generation of slaves from them. That is why I appeal to all our parents to seriously consider removing their children completely from public school if at all possible. The liberal/socialist agenda is being fed to them in giant bites. Think about it.

You know we have reported on this a number of times over the years but it seems parents and pastors are slow to grasp that doctors, particularly psychologists and psychiatrists, are in league with the pharmaceutical industry.
In a recent article investigative journalist Kelly Patricia O’Meara makes the connection between the recent data released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, AHRQ, and the skyrocketing numbers of children diagnosed with “bipolar disorder.” O’Meara writes:
“It is difficult to absorb the recent data released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, AHRQ, on the skyrocketing numbers of children diagnosed with ‘bipolar disorder’ and not come to the conclusion that this startling information represents the never-ending harm initiated by the idiotic psychiatric theories of Harvard child psychiatrist, Dr. Joseph Biederman.
“In order to fully grasp just how outrageous the data are, one first must remember that the now disgraced and marginalized Biederman is credited with being the ring leader for diagnosing the alleged bipolar disorder in very young children.
“To add insult to injury, not only was Biederman the chief advocate of the now controversial diagnosis, but he is also credited with prescribing the most powerful antipsychotic drugs as treatment.
“It was only due to a Congressional inquiry by Senator Charles E. Grassley that the apparent motive behind Biederman’s childhood bipolar diagnosis was uncovered… money.”
Another story confirming this appeared on April 28 in the Houston Chronicle. The left does not want to discuss this aspect, but that would mean we have to ignore the facts in virtually every shooting to date. I guess that is really the point.
Laughter is a medicine
This story made me well:
An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anesthesia, he asked to speak to his son.
“Yes, Dad, what is it?”
“Don’t be nervous, son; do your best, and just remember, if it doesn’t go well, if something happens to me,
your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife.”
“If you just set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time and you would achieve nothing.” — Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, on her 10th anniversary in that position.
