The Word for today

“Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.  We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (I John 3:13-16).

Easter in the New Testament

Ah, Easter. The day when every congregation tries to break the attendance record. And that’s good. Let’s do it!

But is Easter in the Bible? The only place one will find the word “Easter” in a Bible is in a KJV in Acts 12:4: “And when [Herod] had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter toEaster bring him forth to the people.”

Of the 52 Bible versions appearing on Biblegateway.com, only the KJV, the KJ21, AKJV, and the BRG (Blue, Red and Gold letter edition) have “Easter” at Acts 12:4. The Greek word translated Easter in that verse is pascha (Mounce, Green, et al), from the Hebrew pasach. (See Vine’s.) “Easter” was not in the Vulgate or the Wycliffe Bible, but was first used in Tyndale’s English Bible. It was not used at all in the 1560 Geneva and only twice in the Bishop’s Bible. The term pascha is used about twenty-nine times in the Greek NT and translated “the Passover” everywhere else in the KJV but this one verse. Why?

By the 16th century, with Passover and Easter occurring close to the same time, the Jewish and Christian festivals were recognized by Christians as virtually synonymous. Therefore, Tyndale inserted “Ester” (sic), reflecting that fact. The 1540 Great Bible followed his lead in 14 places.

The context is “the days of unleavened bread” being celebrated in Jewish Jerusalem. Herod’s actions toward Peter were done to “please the Jews” (v. 3). Peter was a Jew. Luke and Herod were referring to the time of the Jewish Passover festival, not necessarily to the hour of the pascal meal itself. The meal is eaten at the first of the week, but the Passover Festival is observed for seven days (Matthew 26:17-21; Luke 22:1). The reference in Acts has the entire week in view (Vincent).

In the midst of dealing with all this Jewishness, to suggest that Herod had in mind some pagan Grecian festival honoring a mythical goddess is rather farfetched. The current Christian use of “Easter” to commemorate of the resurrection of Christ would not be practiced for centuries. Some extremists try to circumvent this unfortunate rendering by claiming the reference demonstrated God’s providential and prophetic guidance of the KJV translators, as though it was a supernatural prediction of the future Easter celebration.

An interesting and objective discussion of this translational issue appears at http://www.kjv-only.com/acts12_4.html.

Are Muslims exempt from the insurance mandate in Obamacare?

There is an article circulating around the Net stating that the AFA has the word Dhimmitude in it, specifying that Muslims would be exempt from the insurance mandate, but would be covered by it. That would mean, in effect, that non-Muslims would have to pay sufficient taxes to provide free coverage for all Muslims. This would th-1amount to us infidels [read: Christians] paying a tax because our religion is not Muslim. This is basically what Dhimmitude is. In countries conquered by Muslims, non-Muslims are said to be able to keep their faith if they pay a tax, i.e., Dhimmitude, for their “crime” of being a Christian. The only other alternative is death…or immigration if you can escape!

Snopes.com says that the word Dhimmitude is not in the AFA, but it surely seems that it could become a reality right here in America, which they are proceeding to take at an alarming rate. In effect, Christians will be taxed for not being a Muslim. Nice going, Mr. President, setting up Christians to pay for healthcare for Muslims.

Obama once said, “America is not a Christian nation.” He has also made the statement that based on population, “the U.S. is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” He said in the same interview that we need to learn more about the Muslim religion.

We love everybody. We want nothing more than “a peaceable life,” which is what we areth told to pray for (I Timothy 2:2).

Not being a Muslim is a not an expression of hate. Not wanting Shariah law practiced in America does not mean one hates Muslims. Speaking out against discrimination against Christians in matters that favor Muslims over others is not a hate crime.

We love Muslims. We hate no one, period. They should be free to practice their religion as long as it does not impinge on the freedoms of others. If they prefer to live in the relative comforts of this nation, which millions have fought and died for in the last 239 years, they should be willing to understand they can’t impose their religion or their laws on the American system.

Pickin’s from the grapevine

Just so you know: President Obama’s chief advisor all during his presidency, Valerie Jarrett, was born in Iran. When the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was elected in Iran in 2012, Obama gladly called and congratulated him. He did not call Netanyahu for several days and then only upon the outcry from many Americans.

FatwaEven as Secretary of State Kerry was hailing progress in nuke negotiations with Iran, and Obama was extoling Khamenei’s fatwa against the development of nuclear weapons, Khamenei was leading the chant “Death to America.” What’s wrong with this picture?

Why was Obama so concerned about “fair elections” in Israel, Iraq, and Ukraine but is opposed to voter ID in the U.S.?

A franchised gym, Planet Fitness, allows men in the women’s showers and dressing rooms. When asked about the policy, this was the response: “Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.” A while back, one of the PF gyms was sued when a 14-year old girl was assaulted there. – Blaze

We rush to get our Apostolic kids in good colleges but what do they learn? Social engineering. Michelle Obama says we must change our history, so accommodating professors are teaching them a perverted view of American history. At George Washington University, declining to submit to LGBTQ doctrine is a punishable offense—one that runs so contrary to campus politics that it is dubbed an “act of th-3violence.” Get a life, readers. The primary goal of most big colleges is to promote a liberal, socialistic, anti-Christian agenda. Don’t kid yourselves…they are being successful.

A/G Navy chaplain to get heave-ho

A chaplain who once ministered to Navy SEALs could be thrown out of the military after he was accused of failing “to show tolerance and respect” in private counseling sessions in regards to issues pertaining to faith, marriage and sexuality, specifically homosexuality and pre-marital sex, according to documents obtained exclusively by Fox News.

ModderLt. Commander Wes Modder, who is endorsed by the Assemblies of God, has also been accused of being unable to “function in the diverse and pluralistic environment” of the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C. What else?

“On multiple occasions he discriminated against students who were of different faiths and backgrounds,” the Chaplain’s commanding Officer Capt. Jon R. Fahs wrote in a memorandum obtained by Fox News.

Forget quoting Jesus. It’s either quote the Commander-in-Chief or get the boot. But isn’t it true that when the Bible is preached, discrimination is in view in some way? (Matthew 7:13; 10:34-38 ESV) However, it is not a discrimination based on race or hate, but on truth and love. Hate is not in the lifestyle of the Christian. Truth is preached only because we love.

The New Apostolic Reformation: A true reformation by true Apostolics?

In the 1990s C. Peter Wagner and others of his ilk launched what was dubbed The New Apostolic Reformation (herein the NAR). The name reminds one of the guinea pig—which is neither a guinea nor a pig. The Nar is neither Apostolic nor a true reformation. It is an old gal in new dresses that get changed out every few years. We thhave seen her before in Latter Rain togs, in Charismatic attire, in a Dominionism/Kingdom Now outfit, in garments of the Shepherding Movement, in the frocks of warfare praying, and more recently in the garb of the New Apostolic Reformation. Each group mentioned took down a number of ministers on the fringes of classical Pentecostal movements. The NAR is now being favorably mentioned by some of our own ministers. They are urged to back away or be drawn into a movement that will strip them of real Apostolic truth.

The NAR sees its role in the endtime as providing leadership and government for the entire body of Christ, regardless of affiliation. Should they be given that authority, they will lead their victims into confusion and doctrinal error.

Improving the plight of black Americans

We have all had it with racism—both black and white racism, as well as all other kinds. It is time fringe elements of society stop putting others down because of the color of their skin. If this is not voluntarily done, the government will enforce steps that no one will like.

th-2Much has been said recently about the plight of too many blacks in jail, too many being executed on the streets by others in their ’hood, too many not finishing school or getting better jobs. How can these conditions be rectified and overcome?

Columnist Cal Thomas shares some common sense solutions that are worth reading:

“Start by retiring the song “We Shall Overcome Someday.” Then begin teaching and modeling what is necessary for African-American success and then make those standards a top priority of government, church and most importantly culture.

The message at all levels should be: Stay in school, don’t have babies out of wedlock, get married and stay married, be a father to your children, adopt a religious life and don’t take drugs. These are on-ramps to the road to achievement.

The cultural stereotypes that portray black men as oversexed thugs who can’t speak proper English and who dress as if they are on their way to a street fight must be curtailed. Embracing low-class behavior ensures that one is likely to remain in a lower class. Following examples of successful black men and women and ignoring peer pressure to follow a road that leads nowhere will improve one’s chances of success.

Solutions to many of the problems of black America are not a secret, but they must be taught at every level. They begin by allowing parents to choose where their children go to school. More than anything else, a good education will help black children cross a bridge that leads to an even better destination than the one marchers reached last weekend in Selma.”

That sounds like good advice regardless of one’s race.

Poor Ben

The “foot-in-mouth” disease in current politics ruins one’s chances of being electable. Carefulness has become the watchword. Don’t speak your mind. Enunciate the current politically correct lingo or you go to the back of the line. Those who are in power and want to stay, or those trying to attain power, must plug into the mantras and repeat theth talking points handed down from Washington or feel the noose of political oblivion.

Ben Carson became the darling of the political right because he was a trusted brain surgeon and was willing to take on the establishment with fine speeches and a humble personality. But—what a big, meaning-filled word is but—he was drawn into an interview where he was asked whether he believed homosexuality is genetic or a choice. Innocently, he said it was a choice.

One could almost hear a big, ugly-sounding buzzer going off. Wrong answer for a politician in the 21st century. He has been banished by the political hacks to the backside of the desert, to a dark cave next to the one in which Rudy Guiliani is exiled. It seems he is off the charts and no one wants to even mention his name.

Sorry, Ben. When one speaks what he sees as truth in the kingdom of liars, only exile or martyrdom awaits.

Dress code draws cries of “sexist”

In preparation for awards at a special Scholastic Achievement Assembly, the administration of Dowling High School, DeMoines, IA handed down some dress guidelines for the assembly that included:

For gentlemen: dress pants, dress shoes, shirts, ties (jackets optional). No facial hair. No earrings. Be classy.

Dress-code-280x186Included in the list for the ladies were these instructions: Think modesty. Your outfit should attract attention to your achievements, not your body. Choose an outfit that is pretty enough to show you are a woman and covered enough to show you are a lady. Check for modesty in your skirt both standing and sitting. If your hemline draws toward your waist when you sit down, it may not be modest in a sitting position. If in question, wear tights or leggings underneath.

Tops and shirts should draw attention to your face, not your chest. No tops that are strapless or have spaghetti straps. Your shoulders must be covered. If your top has straps, wear a sweater or shrug over the top.

Shoes are to be dress shoes. If you would wear them to the beach they are not dress shoes. Be cautious of high heels as you will need to process in to the gym.” [end]

In the current PC climate in America, the above announcement evoked cries from one senior of “sexist and frustrating…shocked…a slap in the face.” Sexist, I suppose, because guidelines for the ladies were more involved than for men. How utterly ridiculous. What was she planning on wearing—orange construction fencing, a.k.a. the Grammys??

Maskil Psalms

There are 13 psalms in the Bible that are introduced as a “Maskil Psalm.” This is a psalm that is written for instruction and teaching.

Psalms are not merely sung or played in order to feel good and move about motivated by uplifting music. The Pentecostal songs of the past had testimonies about doctrinal revelation, the blood of redemption, the coming of the Holy Spirit, holy living, and a daily walk of trust and victory.

In looking up the term on the Net, one group who uses the term to provide direction for Maskilthe music (written, played, and sung), provided the following information:

“We took the name Maskil from the Psalms. Some of the Psalms were called ‘a maskil’ normally in the phrase ‘a maskil of David.’ In the NASB it said a maskil was a ‘Skillful, Poetic, or Didactic Psalm.’ We thought that sounded like a fitting name because that’s what we wanted to be (skillful, and poetic), and that’s what we wanted to do (teach the Psalms with music, didactic). Upon further inquiry into the word ‘maskil’ we discovered it literally meant ‘enlightenment.’ At first we were a little bit surprised at its literal definition, but then we saw the connection. When King David wrote ‘a maskil’ it was to teach the people a truth of God or a truth about God. It was to illumine the eyes and open the ears of those listening to give greater understanding (in other words to enlighten them.) In Psalm 119 the Psalmist asks over and over that God would open his eye to behold wonderful things from His Word, and to write them on his heart! That’s our desire for everyone who listens to our songs, that they would understand God’s Word better than before, that the music would give a better understanding of the Psalm’s message, and that it would serve to help them remember the very Words of God. Jesus said we were to be a light unto the world. We pray our music is as well. (http://maskil.us/about.html)

An appeal to Apostolic songwriters

Some folks miss the “teaching songs” that were so such a part of the Pentecostal past. I recognize it is unwise to ever mention “the past,” lest some youthful smartmouth who is consumed with modernity accuse you of living in the past and hoping for its return.

thSorry, that is not me. I am in the here and now. But that does not mean that songwriters can’t draw some inspiration from what was but is not. David’s psalms were penned 3500 years ago, so we should avoid them as relics of history? Come now and let us reason together.

By teaching songs, I mean those songs that contained doctrine and affirmed our theology. Examples: All In Him, Amazing Grace, Everybody Will Be Happy Over There, I Believe Jesus Saves, I Love To Tell the Story, More About Jesus, No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus, Take the Name of Jesus With You, Tell Me The Story of Jesus, The Gloryland Way, The Love of God, What A Friend. We learned of Jesus’ true identity, of His love and grace, of salvation and eternal life through those songs.

We were taught about our future hope in songs like Heaven’s Jubilee, I’ll Fly Away, I’ll Live On, That Glad Reunion Day, The Unclouded Day, When Morning Comes, When We All Get To Heaven, and Won’t It Be Wonderful There. That type of song kept our eyes on the goal.

We shared our testimony in hymns like My Thanks To Him, A New Name In Glory, th-1Blessed Assurance, Friendship With Jesus, He Brought Me Out, He Keeps Me Singing, It Is Mine, He Wrote My Name, and I Feel Like Traveling On. Such songs allowed us to testify without standing alone and describing how we were saved and delivered. The songs told of doctrinal revelations, real repentance and forgiveness, the blood of redemption, the coming of the Spirit into our lives for guidance and power, separation and holy living, and a daily walk of grace and trust.

I am not suggesting that we return to singing those same songs to the exclusion of the new “praise and worship” songs we do today. But songs with more substance and doctrine in them might help in solidifying the faith of our youth.

Hint: we might see greater participation from those above the age of the age of 30 in the services if we had more songs with some kind of melody (read: tune), and fewer weird chords that are more difficult for middle aged and older saints. Just a thought.

A way with words

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” — H. L. Mencken in Baltimore Sun, July 26, 1920.
